i wonder if there was anything interesting (or subversive to my computer)
in that obscurely formatted secret enclosure that i received from the
list-server yesterday. in other words, how do i read it? i have no idea
what (commonly available) software reads postscript format.

Really? When did this happen? Did this happen to you or are you passing on

Subject: Yaesu FT-530 Mod
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
MOD for YAESU FT-530,
Opens up the following bands
- 110-180MHz Tx+Rx
- 400-500MHz Tx+Rx
- 800-950MHz Rx Only
*Remove antenna and battery
*Remove four screws on botton holding battery track.
*Remove the four (black) screws holding rear case.
*Slowly... open the front cover from transceiver and lay both halves on table.
*Note positioning of white paper insulator and lift out (do not throw away).
*Carefully locate Jumper Pad 13 and remove solder (shown in diagram).
*Re-install white paper insulator, make sure the ground tab goes through ok.
*Close radio back up (Careful not to pinch the ribbon cable when closing)
*Re-install screws.
*Attach antenna and battery
*Turn off radio.... Press and hold both arrow keys while turning radio on.
*MOD Complete!
Solder pads are located in bottom right portion of circuit board in the
following configuration.
2 (|) (|) 1 |
4 (|) (|) 3 |
6 (|) (|) 5 |
8 (|) (|) 7 |
10 (|) (|) 9 |
12 (|) (|) 11 []|<<- [] = small surface mount component.
14 (|) (|) 13 []/
16 (|) ([])15 /
______________
NOTE: These pads are not in a straight line. Notice pad 15 has a surface mount
diode on it. Pads 11 and 13 are close to a component, so be careful.
If you remove solder from pad 13 it will allow Tx and Rx out of band.
Removing solder from pad 13 and removing diode from pad 15 will allow Rx only.
Good Luck!
/***********************************************************/
Does anybody know what the other pads are for??
When I first tried the Mod I miscounted and removed pad 11 solder and didnt
notice any change.

Blaine Kubesh

If I recember correctly, Bob had a business relationship with AEA; I don't
recall that he mentioned anything about a business relationship with CT.
What I *do* recall is that when Bob inquired about an API for the CT card,
they offered to sell it to him for $5K. Yikes!
I think Bob was trying to make a point about open versus closed systems. The
open system vendor assumes that it will realize more revenue by making its API
available at a reasonable cost (or none at all) because developers will write
applications that will generate more harware sales, while the closed system
vendor views its API as an alternate source of revenue. Unfortunately,
developers who pay $5K for an API generally sell their software for a pretty
hefty sum, and this certainly won't benefit anyone with regard to the ham
market since, as we all know, hams are notoriously tight with a penny.
Personally, I'm with Bob on this one. My only application to date for sound
is to have my PC make cute little noises when I drag a file to the trash can;
I'm quite satisfied with the PC speaker driver for this purpose, and as a
result I don't currently own a sound card. I'll buy one just as soon as some
good ham-oriented freeware and shareware apps become available, and I'll buy
whichever card that software runs on. After reading Bob's message, however, I
kinda doubt that it will be a SoundBlaster16 ASP.

long enough to type this message.... ;-)
